Poise in Action: Exploring Samatvan with Devki Desai

योगस्थकुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योसमो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते || 48||

 yoga-stha kuru karmāi saga tyaktvā dhanañjaya siddhy-asiddhyo samo bhūtvā samatva yoga uchyate (Bhagavad Gita 2.48)

“With a non-attached mind to success or failures,  follow the yaugika discipline with zeal and passion and/or intense enthusiasm for the self (jivatman) to remain passive and pensive. This gives one even temperament in all circumstances”
– BKS Iyengar, Core of the Yoga Sutras

Samatva means “even-mindedness.” Samatvam means maintaining a balanced state in success and failure, gain and loss, pleasure and pain. Prashant Iyengar says, “The yogi does work with fervour and without attachment. His position like that of a lotus leaf which remains unattached to the water on it.” That is Samatvam, the yoga of equanimity.

Come celebrate the New Year and join us for a wonderful exploration of Iyengar yoga through the lens of the Bhagavad Gita. BKS Iyengar famously said, “my body is my temple and asanas are my prayers.”  How can our asana practice cultivate a spirit of devotion to enhance evenness of mind? Can we use our practice to develop poise in action?

We are honored to explore the answers to these questions with Senior RIMYI teacher Devki Desai, a direct disciple of BKS Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar and Prashant Iyengar. Her lyrical teaching will draw you deep into the state of inner poise, the state of yoga, bringing a healthy mind to a healthy body.

Senior Iyengar Teacher Devki Desai

Devki Desai began her study of Iyengar Yoga in Mumbai at the age of 19 under the direct guidance of Sri BKS Iyengar. In 1988, marriage brought her to Pune. As a result, she was given the opportunity to further deepen her studies at RIMYI. She is a direct disciple of Guruji, Geetaji and Prashantji.

For the last twenty years, she has been teaching at the mother institute.  Her teaching journey began with women and children at the behest of Guruji. She accompanied Geetaji in 2003 to South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia for national conventions. In 2009, she was blessed to accompany Guruji to Russia. Devki annually travels internationally to teach workshops. She has taught in the United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Russia, France and Indonesia.

Her students often comment on her ability to beautifully incorporate the philosophy of Patanjali, the precision and discipline of the Iyengar practice with youthful energy. As a Senior teacher at RIMYI, she currently instructs pranayama,  Intermediate level 2 and the Sunday children’s classes. In addition, she substitute teaches Advanced-level classes, as well as assists in the therapeutic classes.
