This page will walk you through everything you need to know about our studio and policies, how to navigate Momence to sign up for classes and manage your account, and how to prepare for your first class.

FAQs

How do I sign up for a class?2024-02-16T17:57:55+00:00

You can view our class schedule under the “Classes” tab in the website menu. The sign up widget separates events into Classes, Workshops, Courses, Semesters, and Retreats. Feel free to toggle between these options to explore our offerings or track down something specific you’re interested in.

  • Once you’ve identified an event you’d like to attend, select the “Book Now” button.
    • If it is a hybrid event (meaning that it is taught in-studio and online simultaneously) a pop-up window will open asking if you want to attend Online or In-Person; make your selection. A new tab will open in your browser to continue the registration process.
  • The new tab will be a Momence.com page – this is our booking system. If you already have an account, you can sign in and any class passes on your account will come up for you to use. If you are new to the studio and/or Momence, you can select a new Class Package (if they are applicable) or simply pay the drop-in price.
  • Enter your contact and payment information
  • Read our safety waiver and check the box indicating that you have read and agree to it
  • Hit the Purchase button

Congratulations! You have just booked a class. You will receive a confirmation email for your class registration and the package (sometimes called a Membership) purchase. The package/membership confirmation email will also have a link to create a password for your new Momence account so that you can sign in again in the future to register for other events.

What is your cancellation policy?2024-01-19T18:33:32+00:00

For Weekly classes: We have a 48-hour cancellation policy. This means that in order to receive a class credit or refund you must cancel your registration at least 48 hours before the class start time. If you cancel with less than 48 hours of the class start time, you will not receive a class credit or refund.

For Workshops: All registrations are final. We cannot offer refunds unless your spot is filled by the waitlist.

If you have tested positive for Covid, have symptoms, or have been exposed to someone else with Covid: you must cancel your in-studio class registrations until you are testing negative for 5 days. Once you have tested negative for 5 days, you can return to in-studio classes but we ask that you wear a mask for an additional week. We will provide class credits for cancellations due to Covid.

Do I need to sign up for a class ahead of time or can I simply walk-in and pay?2024-02-16T17:58:16+00:00

We require registrations in advance for all classes and workshops. In-Studio events can have limited space and fill up quickly. We also require that proof of Covid-19 vaccination be sent through email ahead of time. Online registrations require getting a Zoom link in time and reading important information on how to set up your home-practice space so that the teacher can see you.

What do I need to do to take an online class?2023-12-20T17:35:48+00:00

You’ll need to register for the class ahead of time (see FAQ “How do I sign up for a class?”), download Zoom, and set up a yoga space in your home.

Zoom

  • Download Zoom onto whatever device you are planning to use to join class and create an account
  • Make sure that your Zoom name matches the name that you used to register for class. If we don’t recognize someone’s name, we may not let them into the class.
  • You will receive the Zoom link via a Class Reminder email 1-2 hours before the class starts. You can either follow the link in the email and enter the password or you can open Zoom on your device and sign in, then select “Join a Meeting” and manually enter the Meeting ID and Password (included in your class reminder email). Try to join the meeting a few minutes before the class time to make sure you have time to fix any errors that may come up with Zoom.
  • Once you’ve have joined the class, please keep yourself muted and your camera on.
    • You can unmute if the teacher asks you something or if you have a question but unmuting yourself at any other time can create background noise and audio feedback.
    • If you need to turn your video off due to an emergency or a private moment happening in your home, please send a chat to your teacher quickly explaining the situation and an estimate of when you will be able to turn your video back on.

Setting up a Practice Space

  • The ideal yoga space should have plenty of open floor space around your mat, an empty wall that you can use to put your hands or feet on, and your props nearby.
  • Make sure that you can be seen clearly in your camera
    • Once you have Zoom, you can test your camera view under the “Video Settings”.
    • Make sure you have plenty of light and can be seen laying down, sitting down, and standing up. It is best if you can move from one position to another without having to change the camera angle but if you do need to change the angle, practice changing them beforehand so that you can do it easily during class.
    • Make sure that you are not backlit. This means that if you have windows behind you, you will need to close the curtains so that the sun does not shine in behind you. It blurs the camera image and and leaves your body in the dark
  • Your yoga props kit should include:
    • A mat
    • A chair (a metal folding chair is best but stable kitchen chairs with 4 legs can also work)
    • 2 blocks
    • 3 yoga blankets
    • 2 yoga straps
    • A bolster
  • If you don’t have all of these props, some household items can work as substitutions. You can use bath towels instead of blankets, robe belts as straps, sturdy books as blocks. Please make sure to have these nearby if you need them.
Is there anything I need to tell the teacher before class?2024-02-16T17:59:35+00:00

Yes – please inform your teacher if you have any medical issues or concerns such as new or pre-exisiting injuries or illnesses. Even if it doesn’t seem relevant to yoga, inform your teacher anyway; yoga can have a profound effect on every system of the body and your teacher may know of alternatives that will be relevant to you. 

For students that menstruate, please inform your teacher if you are menstruating (and which day of the cycle you are on, if you know); there are many poses which should not be done during menstruation and your teacher will give you alternatives throughout the class. You should also inform your teacher if you are pregnant and how far along you are. 

You can send any of this information in an email ahead of time.

How do I submit my proof of Covid-19 vaccination?2023-12-20T17:55:15+00:00

We are requiring proof of Covid-19 vaccination for all studio events. After you have signed up for one, you can email a photo or scan of your Covid-19 card to our Studio Administrator, Sarah Leboeuf, at studioadmin@iycwm.com

She will confirm through email that it has been received. You do not need to bring it in person with you once you’ve received that confirmation.



Do I need to bring my own yoga mat?2023-12-20T17:43:37+00:00

If you would like to bring your own yoga mat you are more than welcome to but we do have many available for use at the studio. We simply ask that if you use one of our studio mats that you wipe it down with our disinfectant before leaving.

You don’t need to worry about bringing any other props – we have everything you can imagine – blocks, bolsters, blankets, straps, ropes, etc.

 

Can I bring my water bottle to class with me?2023-12-20T18:06:25+00:00

Please avoid bringing water bottles with you to the studio. Following the Iyengar yoga tradition, drinking water during a yoga practice is not recommended unless one has a medical condition which requires it. In the event that you absolutely do need water, we have a water cooler and cups downstairs available for student use. 

If you do end up bringing your water bottle, please leave it downstairs in the student lounge and don’t forget to take it home with you.

Wear comfortable clothing that you can move around easily in.

If you are attending class online –

  • Please avoid wearing black – especially black pants as it creates a sort of optical illusion that makes it very difficult to decipher which leg is which in certain poses.

If you are attending in studio –

  • Please note that we are scent-free studio so avoid wearing any heavily scented perfumes or lotions.
  • If you begin the class with multiple layers on (such as a sweatshirt or long pants over shorts), when you decide to take them off, please bring them to the shoe bins or downstairs to the student lounge as opposed to laying them down next to your mat. It can get messy quickly when people have personal belongings around their mats.

There is a step into our front door, 8 inches in height. The Student Lounge, which includes the bathroom and changing rooms, is down a flight of 15 stairs; there is one handrail on the right-hand side of the staircase.

Where should I park?2023-12-20T17:51:25+00:00

There are several free on-street parking spots available and a parking lot behind our building. You can see the parking lot and on-street options highlighted in Green in the image below. There is a row of 1-Hour Only parking spots directly in front of our studio – please be respectful of these and only use them if you are going to be under an hour. We have many neighbors who need these spaces for their customers. 

You can access the parking lot behind our building via a driveway just after 14 Meadow Street. Please do not park in front of the hair salon, they need these spots for their staff and customers. 

How do I check in for class?2023-12-20T18:08:23+00:00

In-Studio: When you walk in the front door, please make sure to check in with a staff person so that you can be marked as Present for the class. The staff person will inform you if there is any missing information on your registration or if payment is due. Once the staff person gets to know you and is familiar with your name, a simple wave so that they see you may be sufficient. 

 

Online: Just make sure that your Zoom name matches the name you used to register for class and we will mark you as present.

Where can I store my belongings?2024-02-16T18:00:54+00:00

Shoes can be left in the shoe bins to the left as you walk inside. Jackets and bags should go downstairs in our Student Lounge where there are empty storage shelves available. There are no other public entrances to the Student Lounge and it is typically supervised by a staff member during class so you do not need to worry about anyone going through your belongings. Please silence your cell phone and leave it with the rest of your belongings. 

Do you have a restroom? What about dressing rooms?2023-12-20T18:06:49+00:00

Yes, we have a restroom and dressing rooms downstairs in the Student Lounge. Please note that we only have stairs (no elevator) so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is one handrail for the staircase.

Do you have a lost and found?2024-02-16T17:58:37+00:00

Yes – we have a bin downstairs in our Student Lounge with lost and found items. Larger items such as yoga mats will also be left there. If you think you left something behind, please email us as soon as possible so that we can put your name on it and set it aside.

Do you require students to wear masks during class?2023-12-20T18:04:25+00:00

Many students are still choosing to wear masks in the studio, either for their own protection or for the protection of others. You are certainly welcome to do the same but we are not requiring them at this time. We reserve the right to require masks again at any time if needed.

Why are you requiring proof of Covid-19 vaccination?2023-12-29T19:04:41+00:00

Although we have seen a decrease in Covid-19 related deaths, it is still very active in our worldwide health system and there are new infections daily. Because of the potential severity of Covid-19 and its lasting effects through Long Covid, we feel it is our responsibility to the community to make sure that our staff and students have done their part to decrease the chances of spreading Covid-19.

Additionally, many of our students come to Iyengar yoga for therapeutic reasons and may have significant health conditions and/or compromised immune systems. We take this very seriously and do not wish to make their conditions worse through an infection at our studio. 

We do recognize that infections can still spread even when individuals are vaccinated, the point is simply to reduce the risk as much as possible. 

We realize that many people have not been vaccinated for a variety of reasons and we are open to learning more about their situation to see if a reasonable exception can be made. 

Please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns about your vaccination situation. 

What is the studio’s policy for inclement weather?2024-02-16T18:05:05+00:00

We typically make the decision on the day of inclement weather after determining road conditions and student interest in attending class. Sometimes we may opt for making a class online-only if there are enough people interested in that option. In the event that we cancel class, we will email everyone immediately and provide class credits.

If the studio remains open and you are signed up to attend but cannot make it due to the weather, we can either switch you to the online roster if it’s a hybrid class or we can cancel your registration and provide a class credit. Simply send us an email stating that you cannot make it in due to weather and we will take care of it.

How can I learn the Invocation chanted at the beginning of classes?2024-01-19T18:20:26+00:00

The Invocation to Patanjali is best learned through repetition. You can see the chant below and a pronunciation guide under each line.
